Belarus’ border agency: Lithuania has an obligation to allow its carriers to exit Belarus

MINSK, 1 November (BelTA) – The State Border Committee of Belarus has commented on the recent government resolution to restrict the movement of trucks, tractors, and trailers (semi-trailers) registered in Lithuania across the Belarus-Lithuania border, BelTA has learned.

The decision is aimed at protecting the interests of Belarusian and other bona fide carriers.
As the border agency noted, Lithuania has repeatedly taken unilateral decisions to close border checkpoints. Following the first incident on 22 October, three more unjustified restrictions were introduced, and the current closure regime has been extended until 01:00 on 1 December, 2025.

As a result of these measures, nearly 5,000 Lithuanian tractors and trailers are currently stranded on Belarusian territory. They will only be able to leave when the Lithuanian authorities reopen the border.

Previously, many Lithuanian carriers used alternative checkpoints to enter Belarus. After the closure of the Lithuanian border and their mass reorientation to the Belarus-Poland and Belarus-Latvia routes, serious congestion has arisen at those crossings. This has led to multi-kilometer queues and long delays for both Belarusian and transit carriers. This has caused significant economic losses and disruptions to delivery schedules.
“It is the responsibility of the Lithuanian authorities to allow their own carriers to cross the national border,” the State Border Committee stressed.
