Belarus’ approves water resource management strategy through 2040

MINSK, 16 January (BelTA) - The Belarusian government has approved a water resource management strategy through 2040. Prime Minister Aleksandr Turchin signed the corresponding resolution, BelTA learned from the press service of the government.

The strategy’s goal is to achieve long-term water security for the country through the rational and efficient use of water resources while creating conditions for their sustainable renewal.

The main objectives of the strategy are: developing centralized drinking water supply and sewage systems; improving water-use efficiency across all economic sectors; enhancing the ecological condition of surface water bodies while preventing their pollution, clogging, and depletion; and refining integrated approaches to water resource management, including in a transboundary context.

The strategy envisages achieving the following key indicators by 2040: public access to centralized water supply systems at 96% and to sewage systems at 83%; the share of surface water bodies with a good or higher ecological status at 85%; the capacity for a single irrigation of agricultural lands in case of extreme drought covering 600,000 hectares; ensuring the passage of vessels with a 2.5-meter draft along inland waterways for 60% of the navigation period; equipping at least 15 hydrological stations with automated control systems for real-time monitoring and emergency warnings; and increasing water-use efficiency to Br62.5 per cubic meter.

The goal and objectives will be implemented through 35 measures across four areas of water resource management: ensuring soil moisture reserves for agricultural lands and territory watering; creating conditions for safe navigation; further developing centralized water supply and sewage systems in populated areas; and maintaining water bodies in proper condition and improving their amenities.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection will coordinate the activities of government bodies and monitor the strategy’s implementation.
