Azarov regrets Trump’s radical policy shifts

MINSK, 6 August (BelTA) - U.S. President Donald Trump has deviated from his initial second-term agenda and begun issuing threats against other nations, former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov (2010-2014) said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.

“I started talking about the transformation of Trump’s policy back in March. And here’s what I can say: Trump has no policy. What is policy, after all? It’s a set of systemic measures that must be implemented over a certain period to achieve a specific goal. This is what policy is,” Nikolai Azarov said.

The former prime minister of Ukraine recalled Donald Trump’s claims that he could stop the conflict in Ukraine within 24 hours. When asked how he intended to do so, Trump replied that he would call his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and resolve all issues with him. “It was already clear then that Trump had absolutely no understanding of the Ukrainian problem. There were only the most superficial assumptions about what could be done,” Nikolai Azarov emphasized.

Nevertheless, following his inauguration, Donald Trump started to form a more nuanced perception of the issue. “Trump started saying that the root cause of the conflict was Putin’s concerns about Russia’s security, that Putin’s main issue was securing Russia’s western borders. Trump began stating that he didn’t understand the reasons for Ukraine’s potential NATO membership. Later, he claimed the problem lay with the Kiev regime, calling Zelensky a dictator with a 4% approval rating. There were contacts between U.S. and Russian officials, phone calls at the presidential level. Some kind of approach was taking shape,” Nikolai Azarov noted.

However, the former prime minister of Ukraine stressed that gradually, both in domestic and foreign policy, Donald Trump’s stance began to shift. The U.S. president started moving away from his initial course. “And what did he return to? The same thing he became known for during his first term - spewing threats in every direction. Now I’ll impose this, I’ll impose that…” Nikolai Azarov concluded.
