MINSK, 31 May (BelTA) – Yerevan has declared that it has no plans to sever ties with the Eurasian Economic Union, Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan said in an interview with the Vesti program in Astana, TASS reports.

Responding to a question about whether Armenia had assessed possible economic losses in the event of curtailing cooperation with the EAEU, the deputy prime minister emphasized that Yerevan is not considering breaking ties with the union and sees no need for such calculations at the current stage.

Speaking at a press conference on 29 May to review the outcomes of his visit to Kazakhstan for the EAEU summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin turned a question back on Yerevan: how long can one “sit on two chairs’’? The remark came in response to Armenia’s stated plans to integrate with the European Union, a goal that many experts say is hard to square with continued EAEU membership. For now, however, Armenia’s leadership has no intention of leaving the union and hopes to pursue both foreign policy tracks as long as possible. Commenting on the situation, the Russian leader suggested that those pursuing this dual strategy should be the ones to answer for its future.
