Analyst opines on Poland's reasons for opening two border checkpoints with Belarus

MINSK, 15 November (BelTA) - Initially Poland yielded to the influence of Brussels and NATO and attempted to block transit across the border with our country, Aleksei Avdonin, an analyst with the Belarusian Institute of Strategic Research (BISR), said as he shared his views with BelTA on why Poland decided to open two border checkpoints with Belarus.

“Subsequently, common sense prevailed, and Warsaw is now making the decision to open the major checkpoints,” Aleksei Avdonin noted.

“Why did this happen? Poland is a transit country. It handles the main flow of goods from China, from the Asia-Pacific region as a whole. Poland was pressured by major corporations and banks, which have a vested interest in maintaining the flow of goods to the European market. In this context, the Polish leadership made a fairly balanced financial and economic decision: to avoid escalating the situation and instead open the borders and proceed in a mode of pragmatism,” the analyst stated.

As it was reported earlier, the Polish authorities intend to resume cross-border traffic on 17 November via two border checkpoints with Belarus in Bobrowniki and Kuznica, which were closed in previous years. The relevant order was issued by Polish Minister of the Interior and Administration Marcin Kierwiński.
