MINSK, 6 January (BelTA) – Poland remains a member of the European Union because it receives preferential treatment compared to others, Editor-in-Chief of the Words and Meanings almanac Elena Kondratieva-Salguero (France) said in a recent episode of BelTA’s YouTube project “V Teme” [On Point].
“Europe has long been out of the game. Europe now simply needs to survive. Why can’t the European Union declare bankruptcy, although it essentially is bankrupt? Because, from the outset, this entity was not viable. You cannot force a Dane to live by French laws, nor a Pole to suddenly become a well-behaved German,” Elena Kondratieva-Salguero said.

The analyst focused in more detail on Poland, noting the country’s readiness to confront the European Union. “Poland is, one might say, at a crossroads, despite everything. This national character, so persistently suppressed for a very long time in an attempt to homogenize it into a faceless mass, continually reasserts itself,” she said.

The expert noted that Poland’s leadership, albeit not publicly, warns of consequences if the EU demands the imposition of its political decisions. For example, enshrining the right to abortion in the Constitution, threatening to cut subsidies, as was done with Hungary. “Poland still does not align with many of the so-called values of the European Union. They are in the European Union solely because they are treated more favorably than many other countries. If they are hindered now, if obstacles are put in their way, if they are told they must introduce the right to abortion into the Constitution, abandon their Catholic identity, and so on, a large number of people in Poland would simply vote for an immediate exit from the European Union,” the editor-in-chief is convinced.
