MINSK, 4 June (BelTA) – Ukraine’s aggressive rhetoric toward Belarus is aimed at provoking tensions, diverting attention and exerting diplomatic pressure, political scientist Piotr Petrovsky said in a recent episode of BelTA’s V Teme [On Point] project.
He noted that Vladimir Zelensky is already resisting certain U.S. decisions and is now facing additional pressure. “That is why he is trying, at any cost, to discredit the Belarusian side as a negotiator and as a participant in this rather complex process,” the analyst said.
“Let us recall the Baltic states, Poland and Finland – how many Kiev-linked drones have entered their airspace. Through escalation, he is trying to attract attention to himself, secure more funding and put pressure on Brussels so that it does not pressure him. Belarus and attempts to escalate tensions in our direction are one element of this broader escalation. Clearly, all of this is baseless,” he added.
The analyst linked critical statements by the Ukrainian leadership and politicians against Belarus primarily to the intensification and normalization of contacts between Minsk and Washington.
“Within this quadrilateral of Moscow, Kiev, Minsk and Washington, Minsk plays a specific role. First, it is defending its own interests. A significant amount of property belonging to Belarusian companies remains in Ukraine, and its fate remains unclear. Kiev bears direct responsibility for this. Second, Belarus is interested in ensuring that any peace agreements between Kiev and Moscow take Belarusian interests into account. These include guarantees for the transit of our goods through Black Sea ports and, of course, security issues. Belarus is defending these interests and explaining to Washington what the dispute is really about. Kiev does not like the fact that Belarus is taking an active part in this process and highlighting to Washington where the focus should be placed,’ Piotr Petrovsky said.

According to Piotr Petrovsky, the Ukrainian authorities are also using criticism of Belarus to divert public attention from domestic problems, particularly corruption scandals.“Things are not going smoothly for Zelensky on the European track either. The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine is investigating people close to him. Former officials, businessmen and oligarchs have been linked to shadow corruption schemes. Zelensky is trying to raise the stakes and pursue escalation on the northern front,” the analyst said.

Piotr Petrovsky stressed that Belarus has no aggressive plans toward Ukraine and is strongly interested in achieving peace in the region. He also noted that Ukrainian intelligence agencies have not reported any concentration of Belarusian troops near the border.
“All these accusations from Kiev are simply a provocation, an attempt to divert attention and a form of diplomatic pressure,” the political analyst said. “The Kiev regime has long relied on a woodpecker strategy – striking the same point over and over again. Today it is a lie, tomorrow it is an opinion, and the day after tomorrow it becomes accepted as truth. That is the logic at work.”
