Analyst examines UK's claims to Ukraine's mineral resources

MINSK, 11 August (BelTA) – The UK and other Western nations have expressed dissatisfaction with the deal between Washington and Kiev on the use of Ukraine's mineral resources, Bulgarian political analyst Plamen Paskov said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.

“The U.S. president invested considerable effort pushing this document through. It proved exceptionally difficult to finalize. I am referring to the minerals deal with Ukraine. This process began back in February. Until nearly May Zelensky faced intense pressure to comply,” Plamen Paskov said.

The analyst explained the motivations of Vladimir Zelensky, who had tried to delay signing the rare earths agreement with the U.S. The issue is that the head of the Kiev regime had already signed a nearly identical 100-year deal with the UK earlier. According to Plamen Paskov, this agreement also allowed for the use of Ukrainian resources by British allies, including Germany and France.

“This is evident from the fact that after Donald Trump secured this deal, a so-called coalition of the willing emerged. I called it the coalition of deprived stakeholders. It revealed who the 'shareholders' were in this 100-year British agreement,” he noted. “Britain was the dominant player, while others merely held minor stakes in Ukraine's resources. They were extremely displeased with the U.S.'s non-collaborative approach. In fact, some even threatened to deploy troops to Ukraine.”

Plamen Paskov believes that the UK and other countries began pressuring Donald Trump, demanding a renegotiation of the Ukrainian minerals deal. This, the analyst suggests, was the real purpose behind Donald Trump's late July visit to the UK. “Effectively, they told Trump he had to share and proposed working out the terms,” he concluded.
