MINSK, 19 November (BelTA) – Despite  corruption cases in the Ukrainian leadership, the West will continue supporting Vladimir Zelensky, member of the Another Ukraine movement, former member of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada Spiridon Kilinkarov said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
The former Verkhovna Rada member commented on the corruption scandal that has erupted in Ukraine. As previously reported, on 10 November, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) exposed a $100 million money laundering scheme in the country's energy sector resulting in charges against seven individuals, including businessman Timur Mindich.

Spiridon Kilinkarov noted that not only the Ukrainian leadership but also European politicians would face the consequences of this investigation. Nevertheless, he believes, the European Union will continue supporting Ukraine, even despite the uncovered corruption. However, European leaders will have to answer to their taxpayers for the funds that were spent on supporting Kiev.

“They will have to answer not only to their political opponents, who have criticized them for this, but also to European taxpayers. They would like to know how hundreds of billions of euros were spent on funding an insane war while Europe itself grapples with an economic crisis, budget deficits, industrial decline, and mass layoffs,” Spiridon Kilinkarov said.

According to the expert, the leadership of European countries will continue to justify their support by portraying Ukraine as a developing democracy and Vladimir Zelensky as doing everything in his power. “No one will confront Zelensky with the key question, whether he was fighting corruption or leading it. Was he hindering the work of anti-corruption agencies or helping them? For Ukrainians, the answer is perfectly clear: he did everything he could to obstruct the NABU and SAP [Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office] investigations,” Spiridon Kilinkarov emphasized.
