Belarus’ upper house of parliament passed the bill to ratify the treaty on security guarantees within the Union State between Russia and Belarus at a sitting of the second session on 26 February, BelTA learned.
“The treaty between the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation on security guarantees within the framework of the Union State is of strategic importance for strengthening the allied relations with the Russian Federation. The treaty relies on the universally recognized approaches. This way the signatories show that they will strictly abide by the norms and principles of international law as they fulfill mutual security commitments,” Sergei Aleinik said. “The treaty is aimed at strengthening the security of the parties within the framework of the common defense space of the Union State. According to the document Belarus and Russia shall undertake the necessary measures in case of encroachments on the security of either party or the Union State as a whole.”
The document was adopted in a very difficult geopolitical context, the Senator said. “By ratifying the treaty, we emphasize the high coordination of the work at the level of our legislative bodies, our governments,” he stressed. “This document cements our common defense space, ensures defense security of the Union State along the outer perimeter. The treaty is exclusively peaceful and defensive in nature and is based on the recognized norms of the UN Charter.”
“The treaty incorporates political, economic and other aspects and provides for the possibility of joint initiation of responses to economic coercive measures and unilateral economic measures, other types of hybrid aggression,” Sergei Aleinik added.
