Lukashenko: Year of Historical Memory will focus on heroic legacy and truth

MINSK, 6 January (BelTA) – Year of Historical Memory, which was declared in Belarus in 2022, will focus on the preservation of the heroic legacy and the truth about all periods of life of the Belarusian people, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at a government session to discuss the implementation of Belarus' historical policy on 6 January, BelTA has learned.

According to the head of state, it is necessary to systematize historical research, memorial complexes, to determine the dates, events and personalities to be immortalized in the future, to make adjustments to the work on the patriotic education of children and youth based on the facts of the heroic deeds of their ancestors. “Today, all this work is one of the most important areas for the country's national security,” the Belarusian leader stressed.

Aleksandr Lukashenko said that the utmost attention should be paid to the so-called historical policy: “For the first time since our independence, we have put these two concepts - ‘history' and ‘politics' - side by side. Up to now, we have tried our best to avoid politicizing history. The political course chosen by the Belarusian people has always been aimed at preserving good relations primarily with our neighbors.”

According to the head of state, Belarus has always suppressed any manifestations of revanchism, nationalism, chauvinism, and other ideas that discriminate against the history, culture, and other peoples. The country has also avoided wars of memory in order to strengthen its statehood and tried not to hurt the national feelings of those people with whom Belarusians used to live in common states.
