Lukashenko urges Shklov District to sort out its agricultural sector

SHKLOV DISTRICT, 27 September (BelTA) – Shklov District must sort its agricultural sector out and eliminate mismanagement, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said during a working trip to Shklov District in Mogilev Oblast on 27 September, BelTA has learned.

The head of state was briefed on the autumn field work in Shklov District, Mogilev Oblast, and the country as a whole. The president inquired about the progress in the potato, sugar beet, and flax harvest.

The discussion turned to reducing or increasing the acreage for sugar beets in the district. This is a rather sensitive issue, given that sugar mills primarily work with nearby regions. In this context, a problem arises with delivering beets from those parts of the country that are on the 'periphery.'

“Let's analyze the situation. We have four sugar mills in the central and western parts of the country. Here, in the east, there are none. But if we see the prospects, a small factory could be built here. We know how to do this; it's not a sophisticated facility,” the head of state said. However, he added, there must be a clear understanding that this mill will have a reliable supply of sugar beets.

The president pointed out deficiencies he had noticed on the way to the farm. In particular, Aleksandr Lukashenko observed that good corn was growing near the road, while further out in the fields, the situation was noticeably worse. Additionally, the head of state noted that the height of the rapeseed crops indicated that growth regulators had not been applied there.

“If we don't sort things out, we'll be going hungry!' Aleksandr Lukashenko noted.

The corn harvest across the country was also on the agenda. According to Agriculture and Food Minister Yuri Gorlov, corn has been planted on approximately 1.3 million hectares, most of which is being harvested for silage. Aleksandr Lukashenko inquired about the yield prospects for this agricultural crop.

The head of state instructed that planting be completed across the country's southern regions by 3 October and in other regions by 1 October.
