MINSK, 29 July (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko will meet with Minister of Foreign Affair of Ethiopia Gedion Timothewos, BelTA has learned.

The Ethiopian foreign minister is in Belarus on a working visit, including to deliver a personal message from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali.

A reminder, Aleksandr Lukashenko met with Abiy Ahmed Ali on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan in October 2024. Speaking about the development of cooperation, the Belarusian leader proposed: “Let’s start by getting to know each other better. But I am in favor of quick steps. The world is changing rapidly, and it prompts us to speed up. Therefore, we are ready to move as quickly as possible on everything we agree upon, as long as you are ready.”

Bilateral cooperation is of particular importance given that Belarus sees Ethiopia as a gateway to Africa. “That’s why we are very interested in cooperating with you. I believe we should not just resume but also improve and upgrade our cooperation. We are ready for this,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said during the meeting in Kazan.

In turn, Abiy Ahmed Ali expressed gratitude to the Belarusian side for resuming cooperation and for mutual support on the global stage. He remarked that Ethiopia is primarily interested in joint work in agriculture and the modernization of the agricultural sector. There is also interest in cooperation in the textile industry, mining, high technology, and several other areas.

In April of this year, Belarusian Foreign Minister Maksim Ryzhenkov visited Ethiopia. The Belarusian delegation held a series of talks with key representatives of the Ethiopian government and business. Discussions included adapting Belarusian technologies to Ethiopia’s needs and modernizing the country’s production capacities. The parties also discussed supplies of Belarusian machinery, the creation of joint ventures, and personnel training in Belarusian universities.

Regarding the agricultural sector, the main focus is on training personnel for Ethiopia in four Belarusian agricultural universities, as well as introducing Belarusian agricultural mechanization technologies. The Ethiopian side expressed interest in establishing long-term partnerships for the supply of Belarusian fertilizers.

During Maksim Ryzhenkov’s meeting with Minister of Foreign Affair of Ethiopia Gedion Timothewos, which was also attended by representatives from the ministries of industry, agriculture, and food, the parties agreed to intensify work on a cooperation roadmap, which is expected to be signed by the two countries’ leaders.
