Lukashenko talks about delayed collaborationism in today's Belarus

MINSK, 2 July (BelTA) – Belarus has encountered the phenomenon of the delayed effect of collaborationism in today's reality. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement at a solemn assembly held on 2 July in anticipation of Independence Day, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko stated: “We know that many of the challenges to our statehood and sovereignty that we deal with today stem from the years of the Great Patriotic War. More than that, we've encountered the phenomenon of the delayed effect of collaborationism in today's reality.”

The president remarked it is not the first time that so-called “freedom fighters” in Belarus lose connection to the native land and participate in crimes against their own people. In his words, it happened during the French invasion of Russia in 1812 when some of the local elite joined the banners of Napoleon's army. It happened during World War One and World War Two when traitors swore an oath of allegiance to the German army. “Unfortunately, it is partially true in our days as well,” he stated.

“Modern collaborationists have come out into the open. They are idea-driven followers, among whom there are hereditary descendants of the Nazi,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said. “They want to reverse the flow of history, rehabilitate their grandfathers and great grandfathers and finish the work they started. This is why they set out to crush the sovereign country. It is unthinkable: they went to sacred places of our statehood carrying banners of fascist mercenaries – police goons. We had to defend our sovereignty and the country. Time demonstrated that we did the right thing. There are probably no more Belarusians, who don't see what actually happened yesterday and what is happening today. There are only enemies left, who say: no, it is not so, it is a different thing. And you have to understand it.”
