MINSK, 29 August (BelTA) – It is very important and honorable for Belarus to be part of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said in an interview with China Media Group, BelTA has learned.
The journalist asked the president how he assessed Belarus’ membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. The conversation also touched on the SCO summit that is due in Tianjin, China. Aleksandr Lukashenko drew attention to the fact that more than 20 heads of state are to attend the summit.

“It is very important for us – as you have said – to be in this family. It is inspiring for any nation, including Belarus, to know that their president is part of this reputable family,” the head of state said.

According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is composed of states that play a defining role in global development. He identified nations such as Russia, China, and India as a central core, attracting a circle of other developed and advanced countries. The president further noted that SCO members collectively possess sufficient technological capability and human resources to drive progress.
“We have a strong currency – the yuan –which many countries, including our own, are now turning to. We already settle more transactions in yuan than in dollars, a trend accelerated by the ill-considered American sanctions. Currencies like the rupee and the Russian ruble are also robust. Together, this gives us significant financial power. The reality is that today, no major global issue can be resolved economically or politically without the SCO countries,” the head of state is confident.
