Lukashenko on election campaign: It’s time for deeds, not words

MINSK, 16 January (BelTA) – This is no time for debates now. We need deeds now, not words, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko as he was asked to comment on the course of the election campaign, BelTA learned.

“To be honest, I don't keep track. I don't have time for that. I know there are debates. But I haven't seen a single debate. There's no time for debates now. Debates are for people to make up their minds,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said. “Today we don't need words. Today we need deeds. Belarus will never be the Belarus of the 1990s, when I was elected President as a young man. Back then, we could not dream about these ‘palaces’, about production facilities and other things. Then we had to survive. Now we need to move forward, to fight. That's why we need deeds, not words.”

The president cited the imminent opening of a new bus plant as an example. “We will show you that we have both small-scale manufactures like we have seen today and also large-scale plants. The demand for our buses is enormous. We built the plant in a year and a half or two years. That's why we need deeds. I know this more than anyone else. That's why I continue to deal with the issues pressing for the country,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

He noted that the plan of events dedicated to the production sector should be executed by the spring when the attention turns to agricultural topics. “It will be time for crop planting. We will not do without it. Whether I am president, or someone else. Crop planting is a must. Because we cannot do without bread,” Aleksandr Lukashenko noted.

Once again, the president sincerely admitted that he simply does not have time to follow the election campaign. “Do we need a show? No. If we turn it into a show and start shooting at each other, aiming either for the ear or the head, then it would be ‘fun’... And then what? That's why we are calmly gearing up for the election,” he said.
Speaking about the upcoming voting, the president urged citizens to come and cast their votes. “Please find the opportunity and time to come and vote. Make up your mind and come to the polls. Five candidates with different positions, different points of view,” the head of state said.

He also stated that sometimes the pre-election statements of politicians can differ from the real deeds. “Look, Trump was ready to end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours. Today he says that it's not easy, that it will take months, maybe even years. That's what politics is all about,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

“You are experienced, intelligent people. Think. I never talked about elections, never called you to do anything. Come and vote. You have a whole week for that. If you have time, come to the polls. But if you don't want to, no one will drag you,” the Belarusian leader added.
