Lukashenko: It’s necessary to consider building large pig farms for 100,000 head

MINSK DISTRICT, 17 June (BelTA) – The feasibility of building large pig farms for 100,000 head needs to be further discussed with all interested parties, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said following an off-site seminar-meeting in Minsk District, BelTA has learned.

The implementation of such large-scale projects should be preceded by thorough examination and risk assessment. There should be, for example, secured sources of feed, work discipline and strict adherence to technology. After all, with such a concentration of livestock in one place, the risks of significant losses in the event of diseases increase. Therefore, it could make sense to distribute the livestock among four separate smaller complexes 25,000 head each instead of one large facility.

At the same time, it makes economic sense to build large complexes; the financial efficiency of such facilities is higher.

“Let's approach it in a smart way. I will be glad and happy if we build some pig complexes in Gomel Oblast and they do well there. In fact, we need to give a boost to Gomel Oblast. And this will benefit the regional development. But if they can't handle it, there is no point of even starting it there.”

“Let's make up our mind: we can either build four complexes or one 100,000 head complex in Gomel Oblast,” the president said.

There were supporters of both approaches among the participants of the meeting. For example, Deputy Chairman of the Belarusian People's Congress, president’s authorized representative in Minsk Oblast Aleksandr Kosinets believes that it is better not to herd a lot of livestock in one place, but to distribute it evenly among 25,000 head complexes throughout the country, especially since there is enough space for this. If some animals get sick, it will be easier to curb the spread of the disease and save the livestock. Domestic companies have the experience of running such pig complexes; the operating model is time-tested and can be used by various regions. Besides, it is easier to maintain control over discipline at such facilities.

At the same time, supporters of the construction of 100,000 head facilities argue that big complexes have better economic outcomes. The proponents of this approach include, for example, Deputy Prime Minister, president’s authorized representative in Brest Oblast Yuri Shuleiko and Gomel Oblast Governor Ivan Krupko. One of the proposals submitted to the president concerned the construction of such a large complex in Gomel Oblast.

“We, Yuri Vitoldovich, especially the system you are in charge of, have developed a kind of devil-may-care attitude: oh, let’s do this, let’s build a facility for 100,000 head... Take it down a notch. There are many problems,” the president said addressing the deputy prime minister.

The head of state emphasized that the decision must be balanced, well-considered, and not hasty.
