MOSCOW, 13 March (BelTA) - In a conversation with journalists in the Kremlin, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko commented on the proposed €800bn plan to rearm Europe unveiled by Head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and France’s idea to extend “its nuclear umbrella” to allies in the EU proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron, BelTA learned.
“They’d better worry about not losing this umbrella over France rather than holding it over the whole of Europe. That's first. Secondly, maybe they’d consider extending their ‘umbrella’ to at least Germany, or in other words sharing nuclear weapons with Germany, their eternal historical enemy. For the time being they are at peace with each other. But who knows... They hold a lot of grudges and grievances against each other. The same goes for Poles and Germans, you know... There are a lot of contradictions there,” the head of state said.
As for the rearmament plan, Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “They will struggle to agree on €800 billion and then they will have to find this €800 billion.
“There is another way. A completely open, honest, peaceful way. Prompted by the conflict in Ukraine. Enough, we've had enough of wars, let's live amicably and build normal relations,” the Belarusian leader said. “You see that people there [in the European Union] are in a state of unrest. They are used to living well, including at our expense, especially Russia’s and its cheap resources. They have enjoyed good profits. Everyone is used to living well, but this is changing”.
"Ursula has probably never seen a normal gun, let alone a modern means of destruction like a missile. Yet she is thinking globally in terms of rearmament, the creation of a European army," the president said.
"You see the policy that Donald [US President Donald Trump] has been pursuing. All I want to say is: Who will allow them to go with their plans?” Aleksandr Lukashenko concluded.
