Lukashenko: Energy price surge amid Middle East conflict does not benefit anyone

DRIBIN DISTRICT, 13 March (BelTA) – There will be no benefit for anyone in the rise of energy prices amid the Middle East conflict, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko told journalists during a working trip to Mogilev Oblast on 13 March, BelTA has learned.

“The rise in energy prices will not lead to anything good. It’s a whole tangle of problems. There will be no benefit here. If someone does gain something, it will only be for a short period of time. After that, the pressure will start building up, and inflation will accelerate,” the president said. “Just look at what's happening with the dollar. Recently, gold cost a little over $2,000 and now it’s already $5,500. People are trying to avoid the dollar.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko explained that, for example, for Russia this may be financially advantageous at the first stage. But globally, rising energy prices will lead to higher costs for goods, including those that Russia imports in large volumes.

“No one will win,” the Belarusian leader is convinced.
