Lukashenko demands results in Belarusian football

MINSK, 3 March (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko called on the sport officials to deliver results in football as he announced appointments to the government on 3 March, BelTA has learned.

He mentioned the matter as he addressed the re-appointed Sport and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk.

“As for sports, I know he is a demanding person, with a military training behind his belt. It is good. We need this exacting attitude,” the head of state said about the minister's personal qualities.

“I've already told you this. You, together [Chairman of the Belarusian Football Federation Nikolai] Sherstnev, need to stop this red tape. If Sherstnev is not incapable of working in this position, then we'll look for another specialist to replace him. Results are the only one way out of your dispute. As a sportsman you know it very well. It is good when there are results and it is bad when there are none. I've been told a lot of things here, but I don't see any result in football yet,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

“Other sports do not show big results either. Only separate ones, some 5-6 sports, show certain progress. I want you to understand that we need results everywhere,” the president added.
