Lukashenko comments on possibility to penalize those who call for sanctions

MINSK, 9 August (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko commented on proposals to introduce responsibility for calls to impose sanctions. The head of state made the statement during a meeting with representatives of the general public, experts, and mass media titled as the Big Conversation with the President on 9 August, BelTA has learned.

A corresponding proposal was voiced in May at the president's meeting with MPs where representatives of the public were also present. Back then Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that this issue should be scrutinized from a legal point of view. He tasked Chair of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly Natalya Kochanova to deal with it.

“I'll be honest, I was not satisfied with the expert opinion. They said that we already have these norms in our legislation. Still, the language is vague. I suggest we formulate these norms in a more straightforward way: counteracting and punishing for calls for sanctions. Let's formalize that,” the Belarusian leader said. “Therefore, I asked Natalya Kochanova to revisit this issue, and to work out specific amendments to the law with you [the proposal was sponsored by political analyst Vadim Borovik], and I will submit them to the parliament,” he added.
