MINSK, 16 February (BelTA) – The United Nations Organization can be called worthless because it does not address substantial issues but there is no alternative international body for now. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement as he met with State Secretary of the Union State of Belarus and Russia Sergey Glazyev on 16 February, BelTA has learned.
Speaking about the operation of the Board of Peace, the head of state commented on the belief that this body is allegedly endeavoring to replace the United Nations Organization. “Frankly speaking, if an organization capable of replacing the United Nations Organization appeared, I would cross myself and would rejoice,” the president noted.
In his words, the UN’s operation involves quite many empty events that nobody needs. But the truly important matters that need interference remain unresolved. The situation in Palestine and the Gaza Strip is one of the latest examples. “The decision to create the Palestinian state was made a long time ago. Is it solved? It hasn’t been solved. Clashes all the times. A constant war. Has the UN prevented a single conflict? Not a single one,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
“But we are realists. Nowadays there is no other organization where all the representatives of the world powers, of the entire world can gather. There is none,” the Belarusian leader stressed. “This is why I believe that the United Nations Organization is a worthless organization. It doesn’t solve any issues and won’t solve any. Well, there is no alternative.”
The president remarked that permanent members of the UN Security Council may be satisfied with the state of affairs in the organization although certain attempts to change something are already being made even there. However, without noticeable results for now.
For example, the possibility of increasing the number of permanent members of the UN Security Council has been contemplated but this step is unlikely to produce an effect under the current decision-making system. “They want to roll the dice and get seven or eight. But it will change nothing. If decisions need to be made by consensus… If the right to veto exists… And getting rid of the right to veto is not an option considering today’s situation,” the head of state said.
As an example the president also mentioned another body, which efficiency causes great doubts despite the message formulated in the organization’s title: the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). “What has the OSCE done to bring about a calm situation without conflicts in Europe?” Aleksandr Lukashenko wondered. Instead of real actions for the benefit of peace this body makes false accusations targeting the presidents of Russia and Belarus.
Moreover, Western Europe rejects cooperation with Russia and Belarus even contrary to its own benefits. “Consider Europe right now. It is being torn apart. They want to divide, split apart, eliminate Europe. They want to get rid of the euro and the economy,” the president remarked. In this manner powerful players are trying to slow down the economic development of the European Union as a powerful economic region and a respectable competitor for the rest.
“The only country they could communicate with, be friends with, and talk to is Russia. I said it a year or half a year ago. Russia has resources. They have the highest technologies. Let’s cooperate. As a Eurasian region. It would be the most powerful organization,” Aleksandr Lukashenko mentioned a possible variant and mentioned the European Union’s unwillingness to go down this path.
“Macron or someone else has come to his senses at the sunset of his career: let’s establish contacts with Russia, let’s talk. But nobody has refused to talk. I was in the epicenter of it. Some matters were handled through me directly. The French came here. I gave them a message not only from myself but also from Putin. Well, let’s do it. They don’t need it,” the head of state continued.
“Trump tried to move us towards peace in Ukraine. But they [in the European Union] don’t need that,” he added.
Aleksandr Lukashenko believes that right now when there is so much turbulence in Europe and it is necessary to “pacify this region”, it would be possible to actively utilize OSCE resources. However, it does not happen.
“This is why we don’t worry ourselves sick about the possibility that the Board of Peace can replace the United Nations Organization. But, like Americans say, step by step,” the president said.
