Lukashenko calls to preserve unity of Belarus, Russia

MINSK, 16 February (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia cannot lose the common Fatherland from Brest to Vladivostok, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said during the meeting with State Secretary of the Union State of Belarus and Russia Sergey Glazyev in Minsk on 16 February, BelTA has learned.

“We have determined this long ago: we have a single Fatherland from Brest to Vladivostok. Of course, it would be nice if it were from Lisbon to Vladivostok – at least economically. But that does not depend on us. Yet we cannot lose the Fatherland from Brest to Vladivostok. We have defended and fought for it together for centuries, not only in the last war. And it does not belong to Putin or Lukashenko. We are still wet behind the ears compared to what our ancestors defended for centuries. We have no right to tear it apart,” the head of state emphasized. “But in this Fatherland, there are two states. Two sovereign states dependent on each other.”

“That’s just how it happened: we began to build our own state, Russia is building its own. We are in one common house. Russia has a bigger apartment, we have a smaller one. But we each have our own. And we live well as good neighbors. We get along, we understand one another. And if there is more certainty from the Russian government, we will also protect our economic space. We must not jump out of the frying pan into the fire. And we will not. You know what I’m talking about. Without pursuing a policy against anyone. But we, like any state, must protect our own. And that’s the direction we will take. Without pressure on anyone, without incorporating Russia into Belarus, or Belarus into Russia. We have enough sense to forge a real union in this situation that will be indivisible, and no one will be allowed to tear anyone away anywhere. Especially Belarus from Russia,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
“The times are such that we need to be together, know our interests and defend them. We have everything we need to protect and defend these interests. There is plenty of foolishness too. But we see this foolishness, we do not need it, we are able to get past it,” the head of state said.
