MINSK, 18 July (BelTA) - Belarus will work to make the UN more effective, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with Belarus’ Permanent Representative to the United Nations Valentin Rybakov to receive his report on 18 July, BelTA has learned.
“We have been supporting this organization and will continue to do so in the future. We are one of the founding countries of the United Nations. We see the weaknesses, but they are not the fault of [UN Secretary-General António] Guterres and the organization. They are our joint weaknesses, because the UN is a collective body. Everyone has their voice and opinion. Everyone has the right to vote one way or another, to speak their mind. We understand it very well, but we will work to make the UN more effective,” the head of state said.
Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized that the decisions taken in the UN should be fair for all. “The current situation is unacceptable because of the policy pursued by the West, primarily the USA that uses its dominant advantage in the economy, finances. We advocate the United Nations. We will support all sensible initiatives that correspond to our understanding of a just world order, multipolarity and so on. We will work in this direction,” the president said.
He also said that all Belarus’ initiatives, put forward at the UN, are not becoming less significant for the world community. “On the contrary, they are of great relevance. We will stay committed to them,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
The head of state asked Valentin Rybakov to report on the situation in the USA and the UN. “What efforts should we take to make our voice heard in the UN,” the head of state asked.
Valentin Rybakov noted that despite the great importance of various integration structures and various international platforms for Belarus, the UN remains the only universal international organization representing all the states. “This is a huge opportunity for us, and we are taking an active use of it to convey our position, to make the voice of Belarus heard on all issues that are of priority interest to us in the first place,” he said.
