MINSK, 26 January (BelTA) - Belarus needs a “nuclear umbrella” to keep “rain” away, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko told the media in Minsk on 26 January, BelTA has learned.
The president explained that nuclear weapons are primarily used for deterrence. They are meant to prevent nuclear “rain” rather than to get caught in it, the head of state put it figuratively.
“No one wants to go to war against a nuclear country. Not even the United States. They are smart people and understand that it is fraught with catastrophe,” the Belarusian leader said.
The president noted that Trump, unlike many other childless politicians, has a family, children, and he knows what it really means.
“In terms of security, this is the most important issue in our relations with President Putin and with Russia. Not a single conversation or meeting has passed without us discussing these issues. No topics are off limit in this area and all others in relations with Russia,” the Belarusian leader emphasized.
The president mentioned the recent statement by Secretary of the Russian Security Council Sergei Shoigu. He said that Russian “nuclear umbrella” provides protection for Belarus in the same framework scenarios as for Russia. “He stated a very important fact. I must say that Belarus got nuclear weapons largely thanks to Sergei Shoigu. He was an advocate of Belarus having its own, albeit small, but sufficient ‘umbrella’ from the nuclear ‘rain’,” the head of state said.
