Lukashenko: Attack on Iran failed to achieve its objectives

DRIBIN DISTRICT, 13 March (BelTA) – The attack on Iran failed to achieve its objectives, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he answered questions from journalists, BelTA has learned.

“We take a careful, balanced position. A humane one. We’ve had good relations with Iran,” the head of state noted. “They bombed the country. An ancient country. Very spiritual people, Muslims. A war has started. You saw that I met with the ambassador [of Iran]. We had to act humanely. And we did.”

“We are not getting involved in this war. I do not want to create any problems on my country. The Americans and Israelis have already created so many problems for themselves there...,” the president stated.

Aleksandr Lukashenko recalled Israel’s bombing of the Gaza Strip: “Children... everything is in disarray, there is no living thing left there.”

“Iran is a huge country, with mountain ranges. They have dug many tunnels and hidden stuff. No weapon can reach them. The Israelis should have calculated this and laid it out for Trump: 'This is the situation, what do we do?’ They came, took up arms, and charged forward... What came of it? Nothing. I know what they wanted. There were 4-5 points, ranging from overthrowing the government to bombing nuclear facilities and renouncing nuclear weapons. Nothing worked out,” the head of state said.

Moreover, Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized that people in Iran rallied together despite various political contradictions: “If things had been calm, perhaps someone might have tried to overthrow, God forbid, my good acquaintance. People might have taken to the streets and so on. They [the participants in the attack] thought: ‘We’ll bomb, and the people will rise against Ali Khamenei.’ But nothing came of it. When they killed Ali Khamenei, the people - they are spiritual Muslims - they united, and now there is no opposition there anymore.”

“So what did they accomplish? Nothing. The nuclear facilities? They didn't hit a single one. What was on the surface can easily be restored or replaced. But what they hid in the mountains is all intact. They accelerated the uranium enrichment process. They only made things worse,” the Belarusian president stated.

He also said that Iran had approached Belarus on humanitarian matters. “I said: ‘Absolutely.’ The priority, I told them, was to feed the people. It was still the early stages. And it turns out I was right,” the head of state noted.

“Our position is humane. We were under sanctions along with them, and still are. We proceed from a set of reasons, and from this we have built our position and our attitude toward Iran. A humane, fair one,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
