MINSK, 17 September (BelTA) - Olga Chemodanova, Chairperson of the Belarusian party Belaya Rus, asked Aleksandr Lukashenko for his opinion on a possible change to the party's name during the head of state’s meeting with members of the expert community engaged in ideological work to mark Day of People’s Unity on 17 September, BelTA has learned.
The party head explained that the issue was discussed quite actively following the recent party congress. The fact is that both the party and the public association share the same name - Belaya Rus. “Maybe it's time to think about changing the party's name, or perhaps now is not the right time?” Olga Chemodanova asked for advice.
“I have heard this question once before. But I immediately thought: who knows, maybe essentially something needs to be changed there... Perhaps we should look into it so they can further develop,” the president said.

Olga Chemodanova noted that the party already includes approximately 70,000 people. “Objectively, people are simply confused. They have the same name. But we are all consolidated around our country and its symbols,” she said.
“Think about it. I am ready, if it depends on me, to support any decision. But it is necessary to think seriously. If we have set our sights on party building, we must not ruin the party. If it brings benefits, please go ahead,” the head of state said.

He also cautioned against artificially attracting anyone to the party. Olga Chemodanova assured that this is not happening.
“Yes, it is necessary to campaign, to explain, to advise. But dragging people in will be harmful,” Aleksandr Lukashenko advised.
“We are not an organization that is supposed to re-educate anyone. We are a political party. We must follow our own course,” said Olga Chemodanova.
“Absolutely correct,” the president agreed.
