Belarus-Russia Union State treaty on security guarantees comes into force

MOSCOW, 13 March (BelTA) – The treaty on security guarantees within the framework of the Union State of Belarus and Russia has come into force. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko and President of Russia Vladimir Putin signed the protocol on exchanging instruments of ratification of the treaty after official negotiations in Moscow. It allowed the document to come into force, BelTA has learned.
The joint statement made by the heads of state after the official talks in Moscow on 13 March reads: “The parties will continue building up joint efforts to efficiently respond to modern challenges and threats for the sake of bolstering the security of Belarus and Russia within the framework of the common defense space of the Union State of Belarus and Russia.”
The international treaty stipulates mutual guarantees of implementing the necessary measures in case of encroachments upon the security of Belarus and Russia as well as the Union State of Belarus and Russia as a whole.

The fulfillment of obligations provides for collective opposition to unilateral restrictive measures of economic nature and other kinds, for the parties to use the potential of their relations with other states and other subjects of international law to prevent encroachments on security, to respond not only to committed acts of aggression but also to threats to carry out such acts, and to provide the necessary military aid, military technology aid, and other kinds of aid without delay.

The cooperation stipulated by the treaty is of advanced nature, which corresponds to existing political and military challenges.
