Tianjin’s summit described as landmark event of China's SCO presidency

MINSK, 27 March (BelTA) – The summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Tianjin will become the key event of China's presidency in the organization, Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Belarus Yan Feng said during a press briefing, BelTA has learned.

"Last year, China assumed the presidency of the SCO for 2024–2025 and Belarus became a full member of the organization. Undoubtedly, this means that China and Belarus will witness many 'SCO highlights' this year," the diplomat stressed.

"The key event of China's presidency will become the summit of heads of state. This autumn, Tianjin’s summit will bring together SCO leaders. China will share its successful experiences and outline future plans. A new phase of the SCO's development will begin precisely from China."

All member states, including Belarus are also set to attend ministerial meetings to discuss foreign policy, defense, transport, and healthcare.

"China plans to organize over 100 events to discuss political, economic, humanitarian and other matters," the diplomat added. "In addition to the already held events, upcoming activities include a political party forum, a roundtable to discuss global governance, a youth innovation and entrepreneurship competition, a media and think tank forum, a series of civilization dialogue events, film, television and art festivals and much more."

"We invite all our Belarusian friends to actively participate in these events and jointly enjoy the results of SCO development," the counselor stated.

The press briefing, attended by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to the Republic of Belarus Zhang Wenchuan and Chinese embassy diplomats, focused on promoting the ideas of the Two Sessions held in Beijing. The Two Sessions refer to the meetings of the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. These two sessions are held annually in Beijing in March around the same dates and that is why have a joint name. The Two Sessions are annual political events and important opportunities to understand current and future priorities and the country's economic and social development plans.

Chinese diplomats briefed attendees on the key points of Chinese President Xi Jinping's speeches during these events. He emphasized that the Two Sessions is of great significance for fully implementing the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and for the country's development in 2025.
