MINSK, 10 August (BelTA) – There is significant interest in Washington in restoring relations with Belarus, American political analyst Steve Samarin said during his appearance on the ONT television channel, BelTA reports.
“The dialogue never ceased – at the diplomatic level, it persisted continuously and with remarkable intensity. Like all negotiations, diplomacy thrives in quiet. That’s precisely why these exchanges seldom surfaced in media coverage. Then came Keith Kellogg’s visit followed by a second delegation engaging in citizen diplomacy. Most significantly, we saw the Belarusian president’s interview [with TIME Magazine] – clear evidence of this dialogue transitioning from backchannels to public discourse with growing frequency and substance,” Steve Samarin said.
These are precisely the signals Washington is sending. “But frankly, what’s really needed isn’t just sending signals – they should apologize and do everything possible to regain the trust that was undermined by our previous administration. They made such a mess that we are still cleaning up after them,” the political analyst remarked.
“Nevertheless, there’s tremendous interest in Washington in restoring good relations with the Republic of Belarus. The delegations that have visited and the interest shown by the United States toward your country suggest that relations are being rebuilt. We’ll soon see the embassies resuming their work. There have been periodic media leaks about this too. So the process is underway. The night has ended, and day has come,” Steve Samarin added.
The political analyst was asked: Given Trump’s penchant for deal-making, under what conditions could relations be normalized, and would Washington present such conditions to Minsk?
