Sergeyenko: Belarus sees Algeria as reliable partner

MINSK, 25 May (BelTA) - Belarus pays priority attention to deepening the entire spectrum of interaction with Algeria, which it views as a reliable partner, Chairman of the House of Representatives Igor Sergeyenko said during an meeting with Speaker of the National People’s Assembly of the Algerian parliament Ibrahim Boughali in Minsk on 25 May, BelTA has learned.

“Your visit carries significant political importance, as Belarus pays priority attention to deepening the entire spectrum of cooperation with Algeria, whom we regard as a reliable partner,” Igor Sergeyenko said.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives emphasized that, thanks to the joint efforts of the heads of state Aleksandr Lukashenko and Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Belarusian-Algerian ties have today been elevated to a qualitatively new level of mutually beneficial interstate cooperation.

In December of last year, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko traveled to Algeria on an official visit. During the visit the parties signed a roadmap for the development of cooperation between Belarus and Algeria for 2026–2027 and adopted a joint statement on strengthening friendship and partnership, outlining the key areas of cooperation.

The speaker of the House of Representatives noted that the primary task of MPs is to implement the agreements reached at the highest level.

“Belarus and Algeria firmly and unwaveringly defend their rights on the international stage, look confidently to the future, relying on their own strengths and the support of like-minded countries,” Igor Sergeyenko said. In this regard, he noted the positive cooperation between the two countries in the United Nations.

“We are keen on developing partnership with the African Union across all areas, especially in trade and economy. We count on Algeria’s support in this organization and its Pan-African Parliament,” the Speaker said.

Taking the opportunity, Igor Sergeyenko congratulated his guest on the election of the Algerian representative as chairman of the Pan-African Parliament in April of this year, noting that this represents a high level of trust associated with serving in such a responsible position. The Speaker of the House of Representatives remarked that Belarus is an observer in the organization and expressed hope that the further activities of the Pan-African Parliament will give additional impetus to Belarusian-Algerian interparliamentary ties.

“We look forward to maintaining our active contacts and support within the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Non-Aligned Movement,” Igor Sergeyenko added.
The Speaker also noted that today’s meeting takes place on Africa Day. He wished the parliamentarians a happy Africa Day and reaffirmed that Belarus stands firmly behind the efforts to build a strong and thriving Africa.

Continuing on the topic of interparliamentary cooperation, Igor Sergeyenko noted a good start in the work of friendship groups, whose representatives made mutual visits over the past and current years.

“As representatives of the people, we must keep our finger on the pulse of social and economic development of our countries and improving the well-being of the people. Especially since the first quarter of this year has shown a positive momentum. Trade has increased nearly 11 times and amounted to almost $44 million. The tasks are ambitious – reaching $500 million by the end of next year,” the Speaker emphasized.

The Speaker expressed confidence that these issues will also be discussed at a meeting of the intergovernmental commission on cooperation due in Minsk on 2-3 June.
The discussion on the economy is closely linked to the training of skilled personnel, Igor Sergeyenko continued. "We are pleased and ready to present the capabilities of our educational institutions for training highly qualified personnel for Algeria. I propose that we consider other areas of our cooperation and interaction and involving the MPs in this work,” he said.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives noted that the parliamentary delegation, during its two days in Belarus, has already had the opportunity to see many of the country’s iconic places and visit large agricultural production facilities. Today, the delegation will tour Minsk Automobile Plant MAZ. Igor Sergeyenko expressed his hope that the Algerian MPs will form their opinion of Belarus based on what they have seen.

The chairman of the House of Representatives also wished Algeria success in holding its parliamentary elections in July 2026.
