Opinion: Lukashenko’s interview with US blogger shows Belarus’ openness to the world

BREST, 5 March (BelTA) – Aleksandr Lukashenko’s interview with American blogger Mario Nawfal has demonstrated that Belarus is open to the outside world, Sergei Zhuk, an analyst with the Brest Oblast branch of the Belarusian Institute of Strategic Research (BISR), said in an interview with BelTA.

“The president's sit-down with American blogger Mario Nawfal is consistent with our country's policy of openness. We continue to use all platforms, including new media, to articulate our position in the international arena. For us, it is not so much about a format or a platform, but more about the opportunity to convey key messages to the audience,” Sergei Zhuk emphasized.

The analyst commented on the personality of the interviewer. “Mario Nawfal is not just a successful businessman and public figure, he is a person who, according to a number of media outlets, is associated with Elon Musk. His podcast 69 Minutes is one of the most popular media products among conservative voters. Therefore, it is safe to say that the messages of the president of Belarus are aimed not only at the American public, but also at the political establishment of the United States,” the expert remarked.

The analyst also shared another observation. This sit-down was strikingly different from Aleksandr Lukashenko‘s previous interviews to Western media, as this time the interviewer had a different attitude and demonstrated willingness to understand Belarus’ position and its view on global geopolitical processes.

“The key messages of the interview included the president’s call to mend Belarus-USA relations, to align the development trajectories of the East and West, the reduce tensions in the world, primarily by bringing peace to Ukraine. The first step towards this is a ceasefire and full-fledged peace talks. Moreover, Minsk was once again proposed as a venue [for talks] due to the cultural affinity of Belarusians, Russians and Ukrainians,” Sergei Zhuk noted.

Aleksandr Lukashenko urged to accelerate the formation of a new international security system that would reflect the existing balance of power in the world and accommodate the interests of small and medium-sized states. “Undoubtedly, the key role in this should be played by superpowers - Russia, the USA and China. The president reiterated that Belarus is a responsible subject of international relations, a European country, a stronghold of traditional values and one of the centers of Christian civilization. This is how Belarus sees itself in the international arena, which is important, among other things, for the current US leadership,” said the analyst.
