Myanmar FM calls to build security through dialogue

MINSK, 28 October (BelTA) - Security must be shaped through dialogue, Than Swe, Foreign Minister of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, said at the 3rd Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security, BelTA has learned.
Than Swe noted that it is a great honor for him to participate in the conference and expressed his gratitude to the Belarusian government for the invitation and warm hospitality. “This dialogue is very important and timely right now. We have gathered at a time of uncertainty and profound transformation. The world we live in is undergoing major structural changes, reshaping economic power, strategic priorities, the nature of global governance, and the transition toward a multipolar reality. Countries in Asia, Africa, and Eurasia are increasingly shaping the global agenda. Myanmar views this transformation as an opportunity for cooperation, for building a more just, inclusive, and sustainable international system based on equality and mutual respect,” the minister said. This new global trend, he stated, aligns with the principles of Myanmar's foreign policy: independence, non-alignment, indivisibility, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence.

“In this era, threats arise not only from traditional security issues but also from non-traditional ones, which are no less important,” Than Swe stated. “Behind the persistent violence lie deep-rooted causes, many of which stem from non-traditional security challenges. For over a century, the illicit drug trade in the 'Golden Triangle' area has been one of the major issues facing our region. Moreover, during the COVID-19 pandemic, online scam businesses operated by criminal groups shifted to Myanmar. It is essential to cut off the criminal financing, as it will help resolve conflicts.”

The minister highlighted that Myanmar is closely collaborating with neighboring countries, including China and Thailand, to dismantle these networks. Over the past two years, the Myanmar government has detained over 67,700 individuals from 52 countries and dealt a blow to a notorious cybercrime hub near the Thai border, resulting in the arrest of more than 2,000 people.

“In this reality, security must be shaped through dialogue. We can continue to take action, which will allow us to avoid economic uncertainty and global fragmentation,” Than Swe said. “Myanmar welcomes the idea of the Eurasian Charter for Diversity and a Multipolar World. This document and this vision align with Myanmar's conviction: that genuine stability must be founded on sovereignty, the equality of states, peaceful coexistence, and respect for the diversity of development paths. We regard this initiative as a timely and forward-looking contribution to strengthening trust and cooperation among Eurasian nations.”

As Than Swe noted, Myanmar has participated in the Eurasian Economic Forum and the Minsk Conference on Security, demonstrating its commitment to cooperation within Eurasian frameworks: “Through such participation, Myanmar aims to make a positive contribution to enhancing mutual understanding, regional stability, and the collective pursuit of peace and prosperity across all of Eurasia.”
