MINSK, 2 July (BelTA) – Belarus has prepared asymmetric response to the EU’s new sanctions, Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Anatoly Glaz told BelTA commenting on the introduction of the new restrictive measures against Belarus.

“All these sanctions imposed by the EU have one thing in common – they will not help the EU in any way to achieve their destructive goals. The sooner the European bureaucrats understand this, the less harm they will be able to do to European businesses and households,” said Anatoly Glaz. “For us, these new restrictive measures are not something to worry about, we have a lot of development plans, the economy is functioning well and, we have a lot of things and projects ahead.”

The spokesman noted that the country is gearing up for Independence Day and it is set to join the SCO as a full-fledged member this week. The plans include a number of high-profile foreign visits and the launch of ambitious programs with those countries that want to develop mutually beneficial cooperation. “Such countries make up the majority of the world,” he remarked.

“That said, the attempts of the EU leadership to impede our development with their illegal sanctions look a little comical. It is obvious that they rushed to push these decisions through before the chairmanship will change. Yet, these decisions will make us even stronger, reinvigorate our interaction with key partners, and cause inconveniences primarily to Europeans and ultimately will further weaken the European Union,” said Anatoly Glaz.

He believes that if the European Union keeps taking decisions that are unsupported by the global majority, it will hardly be able to claim any significant role in the rising new world order.

According to Anatoly Glaz, Belarus’ government has already come up with a set of asymmetric response measures. They will involve tougher rules for importing products and for the operation of entities from unfriendly countries in Belarus. “We want to reiterate that it was not us who started it, and all the blame lies with the initiators of the sanctions - the EU leadership. Although we still believe that in order to iron out our disagreements, it is more effective not to exchange restrictions, but to embark on a dialogue, to which Belarus is ready in any formats and on all issues, including the most sensitive ones,” Anatoly Glaz added.
