MINSK, 10 December (BelTA) - During its chairmanship of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in 2026, Russia intends to focus on bolstering the organization's and its profile on the international arena, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said addressing the Federation Council (Russian upper house of parliament), TASS reports.
“Next year, Russia will preside over the CSTO. We are committed to close cooperation with our allies to enhance the capacity and international standing of this organization,a reliable mechanism for maintaining regional stability,” he said.
Sergey Lavrov also identified deepening strategic partnership and alliances with countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in various formats as one of Russia's foreign policy priorities. He recalled that during a joint ministerial meeting of Russia and Belarus in Moscow in late November, the parties agreed to strengthen foreign policy coordination and outlined specific steps in this direction.
“Multifaceted cooperation within the Eurasian Economic Union and the CIS is advancing. The new 'CIS+' format, launched at the CIS summit in Dushanbe in October, holds great promise,” Russia's top diplomat said.
