BREST, 22 November (BelTA) – The sanctions mayhem played a useful role for Belarus and Russia, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov told the media following a joint meeting of the boards of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Belarus and Russia in Brest on 22 November, BelTA has learned.
"We need to develop our own platforms that will make us invisible to the arbitrariness of the West. To this end, work is underway in both BRICS and the SCO, and, of course, the Union State, the Eurasian Economic Union," Sergey Lavrov emphasized. He added that any crisis implies opportunities. "The sanctions mayhem played a useful role: we were forced us to stop relying on those who proved completely unreliable as partners," the Russian foreign minister stressed.
Now Belarus and Russia are working on an architecture of Eurasian security. At the 2nd Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security Belarus proposed to develop a Eurasian Charter for Diversity and Multipolarity in the 21st Century. Today, one of the documents that we signed following the meeting was our joint statement, the statement of the two ministers on the vision of what this charter could look like. The next step is the development of the charter itself. We will start this work with all our partners in the SCO, CIS, CSTO," Sergey Lavrov explained. He added that Belarus is a full member of the SCO and a partner country of BRICS, which creates additional opportunities for cooperation.
A meeting of the Supreme State Council of the Union State will be held in December. "I would like to emphasize that it is very important as the presidents are going to sign the most important documents on security that we worked on this year. I mean the Security Concept of the Union State and the Russian-Belarusian interstate treaty on security guarantees. This is the most relevant document from the point of view of ensuring the legitimate interests of our states and the Union State," the Russian foreign minister said.
