MINSK, 17 July (BelTA) - Bilateral cooperation in various sectors was discussed during a meeting between Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov and Laos President Thongloun Sisoulith, BelTA learned from the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The parties discussed the current visit of the Belarusian minister to Laos. Particular attention was paid to the status of the agreements reached during the meeting of the presidents of Belarus and Laos on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan in October 2024.
In the context of the preparations for the visit of the president of Laos to Belarus, the Belarusian side suggested holding ministerial political consultations to discuss all items on the bilateral agenda, updating the legal framework, moving up a meeting of the intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation, organizing a visit of the minister of foreign affairs of Laos to Belarus, and intensifying interaction between public organizations and political parties.
The Laos president instructed the relevant state bodies to intensify joint work with Belarus to implement the agreements reached. “Given the experience of Belarus in the mining sector, he proposed to consider opportunities for cooperation in joint mining in Laos,” the press service said.
Maksim Ryzhenkov, for his part, informed the Lao president of the decision by the SCO Foreign Ministers Council to approve the granting of the SCO partner status to Laos. The final decision will be made by the heads of state of the organization in September 2025.
The parties also lauded the intensification of inter-parliamentary cooperation, including the visit of the Belarusian parliamentary delegation to Laos and the creation of friendship groups in the legislative bodies of both countries. The president expressed gratitude to Belarus for hosting Lao children in the health center Zubrenok, stressing the importance of such initiatives for the development of contacts between peoples.
