MINSK, 7 March (BelTA) - Hostile statements from EU leaders hardly contribute to resolving the Ukraine conflict, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the media, TASS reports.
"Of course, the confrontational rhetoric coming from Brussels and European capitals is in major dissonance with the plans to look for ways toward peace in Ukraine," he said.
The Kremlin spokesman stressed that the European Union makes statements about unlimited support for Kiev and continues to pump money and arms into it. For citizens of the community, this approach is justified by Russia's supposed threat to Europe. Brussels is thus countering any peace initiatives from both Russia and the United States.
Dmitry Peskov also commented on the a rearmament plan for €800 billion laid out by European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen and a 1.5% increase in military spending. According to him, Russia may need to take retaliatory measures against EU militarization to ensure its security.
Dmitry Peskov noted that Russia and the United States need to engage in the dialogue on nuclear disarmament. "This matter is on the agenda. We believe that dialogue between Russia and the United States on arms control, especially on strategic stability is crucial," he added. "It is critical both from the perspective of the interests of our two nations, and most probably for international security."
According to him, European nuclear arsenals should be taken into account during arms control discussions.
"It is impossible not to take into account the European nuclear arsenals during this dialogue [on nuclear disarmament]," the spokesman said. "We remain convinced of this, especially now, in the wake of the recent statements by Mr [French President Emmanuel] Macron about France's intention to extend its nuclear umbrella to ensure the security of European states," he added.
