FM: Belarus seeks full BRICS membership

MINSK, 7 July (BelTA) - Belarus will be seeking to obtain full membership in BRICS, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov told BelTA after the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro.
Belarus has been cooperating with BRICS as a partner state since the beginning of this year. Belarus made it to the first pool of partner countries. This institution was set up following the BRICS summit in Kazan.

“We are grateful to the BRICS member states for their support but our ultimate goal is full membership in BRICS. We will be willing to join once the association is ready for expansion,” Maksim Ryzhenkov said.

Belarus is currently cooperating with BRICS, taking into account the potential of its status. Thus, the country participated in the meeting of the BRICS foreign ministers, which was held in Rio de Janeiro in April 2025. In July Belarus attended the BRICS summit in the capacity of a partner (for the first time ever).

“Belarus traditionally takes part in BRICS parliamentary dimension events, and this year was no exception: the delegation of Belarus’ National Assembly participated in the 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in Brasilia. Of particular interest to us is the youth dimension of BRICS. Working with young people is an investment in the future. In Belarus, this is one of the most important priorities of national development. We support and will continue to contribute to the BRICS youth movement, as was stated by the Belarusian participants of the 11th BRICS Youth Summit, which was held recently in Brazil,” the Belarusian minister said.

At the same time, Belarus is primarily committed to participating in the practical activities of BRICS.

“We are trying to fill our work with concrete content and initiatives. We are grateful to the Brazilian presidency for the invitations to participate in discussions and events on climate change, digital transformation and artificial intelligence, urbanization, cooperation in the fields of energy, healthcare, trade, and education,” Maksim Ryzhenkov noted.

The priority for Belarus in BRICS is strengthening cooperation in politics and security, based on the principles of mutual respect, indivisible security, and guarantees of country development without confrontation. “This is a necessary condition for building a fair multipolar system of international relations,” Maksim Ryzhenkov said. “We are in absolute solidarity and share the view of the Brazilian presidency regarding the need to consistently defend multilateralism in international relations. This is the only way to preserve the international order in the face of increasing polarization and the threat of fragmentation of the world.”

The role of BRICS as a pillar of a multipolar world, a foundation and an integral part of a just world order is becoming critically important.

“Our activities in BRICS are aimed at sustainable economic development to preserve and enhance human potential, ensure high social standards and a decent quality of life, introduce innovations and the latest technologies. Belarus supports Brazil’s initiatives to promote global cooperation in healthcare, including the launch of the Partnership for the Elimination of Socially Determined Diseases within BRICS,” the minister noted.

This year, Brazil is also chairing the COP-30 global climate conference.

In this regard, Maksim Ryzhenkov drew attention to the fact that climate change is a priority on the BRICS agenda. “We fully support the view expressed by the Brazilian president: BRICS has sufficient political strength to realize the ambitious goals of the Climate Change Conference and ensure economic growth along with social and environmental justice,” he said.

Belarus expects to join the BRICS financial institution - the New Development Bank - and focus on joint work to create qualitative conditions for the development of trade and investment cooperation, develop new secure financial settlement mechanisms and implement investment projects in the BRICS space.

“I have listed only some areas of BRICS activities in which Belarus is actively involved. Of course, our interests and ambitions are much broader. We are ready for comprehensive cooperation within BRICS and call for the active involvement of partner states in the activities of the group. Belarus sees BRICS not just as an association, but as a strategic platform for the future. Its members face ambitious tasks that require coordinated efforts. Belarus is eager to take an active part in this important work,” Maksim Ryzhenkov said.
