CSTO states emphasize importance of UN for international peace, security

MINSK, 26 September (BelTA) - The foreign ministers of the CSTO member states emphasized the importance of the UN for maintaining international peace and security, reads their joint declaration on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations which was adopted during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York on 25 September, BelTA learned from from the CSTO press service.

"We, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the CSTO member states, note that the United Nations, established in 1945, remains the most important instrument for maintaining international peace and security, ensuring progressive social and economic development, and protecting fundamental human rights and freedoms. The UN Charter consistently serves as the cornerstone of international law, and the goals and principles enshrined in it are designed to ensure the establishment of a just and democratic multipolar world order,” the document states.

The ministers emphasized that the 80th anniversary of the UN is inextricably linked to another historic milestone -the 80th anniversary of Victory in World War II. “It was the defeat of Nazism, achieved at the cost of the unparalleled heroism and lives of millions of citizens of the Soviet Union and other countries of the Anti-Hitler Coalition, that laid the foundation for a new architecture of international relations aimed at preventing the recurrence of such global catastrophes in the future. The immense significance of the Victory achieved in 1945 as a universal human value was confirmed by the adoption on 4 March 2025, including on the initiative of our states, of UN General Assembly Resolution 79/272 'The Eightieth Anniversary of the End of the Second World War,'” the document reads.

The ministers emphasized that during its existence, the UN has made significant contributions to developing effective solutions for humanity's most pressing problems. The Organization's track record includes numerous achievements in the fields of crisis resolution, strengthening the arms control system, disarmament and non-proliferation, combating poverty, hunger, climate change, epidemics, and so on.

The ministers are also firmly convinced of the need to consolidate political and diplomatic efforts with the aim of generally reducing tensions, resolving existing conflicts, preventing new crises, and ensuring long-term, comprehensive global and regional stability based on the principle of equal and indivisible security, mutual respect for each other's interests, and addressing the root causes of fundamental contradictions.

The ministers of foreign affairs expressed a firm commitment to continue joint efforts to combat neocolonial practices, including through the implementation of UN General Assembly Resolution 79/115 “Eradicating Colonialism in All Its Forms and Manifestations” adopted on 4 December 2024. “We oppose unilateral coercive measures that contravene the UN Charter, which also negatively impact the situation of the most vulnerable populations and hinder the prospects for achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” the ministers said.
