Belarusian minister elected chairman of CIS Interstate Environmental Council

MINSK, August 18 (BelTA) - Belarus’ Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Minister Sergei Maslyak has been elected Chairman of the CIS Interstate Environmental Council for the next term, BelTA learned from Larisa Lukina, Head of the International Cooperation Department at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection. 

Throughout 2025, Belarus will act as the leading country in environmental protection efforts within the CIS. “The Interstate Environmental Council was established to coordinate the activities of CIS member states in environmental protection, sustainable use of natural resources and mitigation of climate change impact. This platform is actively used by participants to discuss and seek solutions to environmental challenges,” Larisa Lukina noted.

The 11th meeting of the CIS Interstate Environmental Council was held at the CIS headquarters in Minsk. The session was attended by permanent members of the council and representatives from observer states.

Key discussion points included environmental impact assessment, water resource management, joint efforts in transboundary protected natural areasand the development of a legal framework for ecosystem services among CIS member states.
