
MINSK, 23 January (BelTA) - Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov is on a visit to Syria, BelTA learned from the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus.
“Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov is visiting Damascus at the invitation of the Syrian side. He met with leader of Syria's new administration Ahmed al-Sharaa,” the press service said.
During the talks, which lasted almost two hours, the parties discussed a wide range of issues and areas of cooperation to facilitate Syria's recovery.
On the instructions of the Belarusian head of state, Maksim Ryzhenkov handed over symbolic certificates for 50 MAZ buses to the Syrian leader. These buses are a gift to the Syrian people from the president and people of Belarus. They will be produced and delivered to Syria within the next three months.
“Noting the competences of our country in the manufacturing industry and agriculture, Ahmed al-Sharaa emphasized the interest in developing cooperation with Belarus, which is based on the long-standing friendly ties between the Belarusian and Syrian peoples,” press service said.
The head of the new Syrian administration said that the Syrian side intends to implement a comprehensive reform of the transport sector. The parties discussed the possibility of assembling buses and farm machines in Syria and also other projects.
“Maksim Ryzhenkov noted that Minsk is ready to continue recuperation programs for Syrian children. These humanitarian programs are run under the patronage of the Belarusian head of state. They have been instrumental in bringing our peoples closer in recent years,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
The foreign minister acknowledged the meaningful contribution made by the Syrian diaspora in Belarus and Belarusian citizens in Syria to strengthening bilateral relations. Maksim Ryzhenkov added that Syrian students can get quality education in Belarusian universities.
The parties discussed in detail the international situation and regional conflicts, emphasizing the common interest in their early settlement.
The minister emphasized that Belarus advocates for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Syria within the internationally recognized borders of the country.
Maksim Ryzhenkov emphasized the readiness to support the Syrian side in its work in international organizations to protect these principles and to lift the sanctions.
The leader of Syria has indicated interest in the earliest possible resumption of full-scale work of the Belarusian Embassy in Damascus, for the work of which safe conditions will be created.
The Belarusian delegation is set to hold a number of meetings in Syrian governmental bodies.
