Belarusian FM: Poland’s decision to close border undermines its own interests

MINSK, 12 September (BelTA) – Belarus is responding calmly to Poland’s decision to close its border, Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov said in an interview with the First News TV Channel, BelTA has learned.

“We’re reacting calmly. In fact, what Poland is currently doing is backfiring on it,” the minister stated.

He went on saying: “In many ways, they’ve achieved what they wanted. You can see how Brussels immediately allocated nearly €50 billion to help defend against what they call ‘hordes’ from the Belarusian-Russian east… Now we understand the purpose behind all of this: the saber-rattling at the border, the construction of massive fences, the escalation of confrontation, and the media portrayal of Poland as the last line of defense [in Europe].”

“Now the money has been received, and soon, forgive me, the carving up of those funds will begin. We know how these things tend to unfold,” he added.

The minister also pointed out Brussels’ role in the situation: “We now know who is in charge and what trails follow these officials when it comes to managing funds for other projects, such as the COVID response and so on.”

“So now everything has fallen into place. It’s all clear,” Maksim Ryzhenkov concluded.
