Belarusian expert comments on Lithuanian MP's ‘brilliant’ proposal to counter weather balloons

MINSK, 29 October (BelTA) - Irresponsible statements by senior Lithuanian officials and MPs have become a negative signature style of that country.,Olga Lazorkina, an analyst with the Belarusian Institute of Strategic Research (BISR), told BelTA while commenting on a Lithuanian MP's proposal to launch balloons with tomato sauce into Belarus.

According to foreign media reports, the Lithuanian MP voiced his idea as a response to the weather balloons incidents. In turn, Lithuanian media criticized the MP’s plan, claiming that Belarusians would be happy about the incoming balloons since they allegedly live in poverty and have no money for tomato sauce. Therefore, it was proposed to fill the balloons with more caustic substances to truly frighten the neighbors.

In this regard, the BISR analyst emphasized: “We have already become accustomed to such statements and proposals... As for the exchange of weather balloons, such a stupid practice has never been used in interstate relations and will never take root.”
“Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko provided exhaustive explanations yesterday on all issues concerning security and relations with other states,” she noted.

Olga Lazorkina stated: “The Belarusian side is always ready to resolve issues constructively. I wish the Lithuanian side started engaging in civilized dialogue rather than putting forward such absurd proposals. Overall, this so-called statement from the Lithuanian side raises a very significant problem in relations with the European Union as a whole. Their politicians and officials must finally reflect on the nature of the messages they are sending to the world.”

“We will respond to this calmly and in a measured manner, as we always do. However, such practices must be stopped at the level of the European Union. I believe we should address Brussels rather than Lithuania. They should take  measures and regulate the situation across the entire European Union. Because such statements and actions lead to escalation, which we do not need at all.”

Olga Lazorkina, who is attending the 3rd Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security, emphasized: “We have gathered here to solve problems and move towards rapprochement, dialogue, and trust. This kind of Lithuanian statement demonstrates that the neighboring country is continuing with the irresponsible policies that lead to the escalation of the situation. This is unacceptable.”
