MINSK, 9 September (BelTA) – Belarus has expressed a protest due to Poland’s decision to suspend traffic across the border for the duration of the Belarusian-Russian strategic army exercise Zapad 2025 [West], the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA.
The Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: “Charge d’Affaires ad interim of the Republic of Poland Krzysztof Pawel Ozanna has been summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus to receive a verbal protest over the decision of the Polish side to suspend traffic across the state border for the duration of the Zapad 2025 exercise.”
“The unlawful steps taken by one country essentially affect the entire border of the European Union with Belarus, creating considerable difficulties for normal international movement of people and cargoes,” the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed. The ministry believes that Poland’s actions are harmful for many states both in the East and the West. “It is an obvious abuse of the geographic position, ‘the privatization’ of the borders of the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union, the West and the East,” the ministry stated.
Belarus is convinced that Poland’s step looks unreasonable, particularly taking into account the completely open and transparent nature of the Belarusian military exercise for the international community. “The temporary suspension of traffic rather testifies to the intention to hide their own actions than to the presence of some threat from Belarus. Such measures represent a continuation of the policy aimed at undermining relations with neighboring countries and contribute to further escalation of tensions in the region, creating risks for stability and predictability in international relations,” the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out.
Belarus’ position was also conveyed to Charge d’Affaires ad interim of the European Union in the Republic of Belarus Steen Norlov. “The European diplomat assured that Poland’s actions will be evaluated to ascertain the adequacy of the implemented measures and the real degree of threat,” the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted.
