Belarus, Nigeria seek to intensify inter-parliamentary dialogue

MINSK, 17 October (BelTA) – Chairman of the Standing Committee for Foreign Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Sergei Aleinik has met with a parliamentary delegation of the National Assembly of Nigeria to discuss ways to step up inter-parliamentary dialogue, bilateral trade, economic and humanitarian cooperation, and the possibility of launching joint projects, BelTA learned from the press service of the upper house of parliament.

The parties agreed to continue inter-parliamentary contacts, including through friendship groups.

Sergei Aleinik also met with Executive Director of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy Thomas Greminger to discuss cooperation in international security, Belarus' peace initiatives, ways to resolve conflicts, including in Ukraine, and the development of the Eurasian security concept. The parliamentarian told Thomas Greminger about the approaches of the Council of the Republic to ensuring security at nuclear facilities in the context of armed conflicts.

Sergei Aleinik held a meeting with UNHCR's Assistant High Commissioner for Operations Raouf Mazou to discuss the forced expulsion of refugees on the western border of Belarus and incidents resulting from actions of the border services of Poland and the Baltic states. He emphasized the need to depoliticize the topic of combating illegal migration and to provide protection to asylum seekers. The parties agreed to continue consultations in order to find a sustainable solution to the issue.
