Belarus’ MFA condemns actions escalating tensions in Caribbean

MINSK, 27 August (BelTA) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus strongly condemns any aggressive actions aimed at creating a tense international situation in the Caribbean region and Latin America as a whole, BelTA learned from a statement released by the ministry.

“Belarus consistently advocates for international cooperation in combating drug trafficking. At the same time, we consider baseless and politically motivated accusations against sovereign states, particularly the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and its leadership, of supporting terrorism and illegal drug trade to be unacceptable,” the statement reads.

The Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged all parties to strictly adhere to the provisions of the UN Charter, particularly the principles of refraining from the threat or use of force and non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states. The ministry expressed confidence that any disputes should be resolved exclusively through peaceful means and dialogue, without resorting to military force or pressure.

“The Republic of Belarus reaffirms its support for the legitimately elected President Nicolás Maduro of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the country’s government, consistently advocating for the preservation of its sovereignty, independence, and stability,” the statement reads.

On 19 August, the Reuters news agency, citing sources in the Pentagon, reported that three U.S. Aegis guided-missile destroyers have been deployed to the southern Caribbean near Venezuela’s coast “to address threats from Latin American drug cartels”. It was also reported that the nuclear-powered fast attack submarine USS Newport News and the guided missile cruiser USS Lake Erie have been relocated to the region. According to CNN, approximately 4,000 U.S. military personnel are expected to be involved in the operation.

In response to the increased U.S. military presence in the Caribbean, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro announced a nationwide mobilization of the Bolivarian Militia.
