Belarus hopes Hungary’s EU presidency helps promote sensible trends

MINSK, 29 May (BelTA) - We would like Hungary's forthcoming presidency to help strengthen sensible trends in European capitals, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Aleinik told the media following a meeting with his Hungarian counterpart Péter Szijjártó and the session of the Belarusian-Hungarian intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation in Minsk on 29 May, BelTA has learned.

“Literally in a month Budapest will take over the rotating presidency in the European Union,” the minister said. “We would like Hungary's upcoming presidency to help reinforce sensible tendencies in European capitals. People are tired of confrontation, pressure and escalation.” He is convinced: “This does not lead to anything good”.

“For our part, we will always welcome the European countries' course towards peace, creation, pragmatism, mutually respectful dialogue and cooperation. Belarus will always respond in the same way. Our relations with Hungary testify to the fact,” Sergei Aleinik said. He added: “For now, unfortunately, we have to take into account the pressure and illegal sanctions against the Belarusian people imposed by the USA and the EU. Today's business forum, which will be attended by a large number of Hungarian companies, shows that neither business nor ordinary people support sanctions.

According to Sergei Aleinik, Belarus understands the obligations of its partners and builds interaction based on them. “It may sound strange, but today Belarus and Hungary remain virtually the only ones in Europe, who actually adhere to the principles of civilized market relations,” Sergei Aleinik said.
