Belarus FM sees talks as the only way to end Ukraine conflict

MINSK, 25 May (BelTA) - There is no alternative to negotiations on Ukraine. The West is beginning to better understand Belarus’ position on achieving peace in Ukraine, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxim Ryzhenkov said in an interview with the First News TV Channel, BelTA has learned.

“We have been seeing this trend for a long time: the president is viewed as someone who understands the current situation very well and, through his personal involvement, can help achieve the goals of achieving stability, security and peace. At least in our region, certainly. Over time, this understanding is growing among more and more participants in the process, which is why they turn to the president,” Maxim Ryzhenkov said.

He stressed that Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko is ready to contribute in every possible way to achieving peace between Russia and Ukraine.

“Such frank conversations (the recent phone call between Aleksandr Lukashenko and French President Emmanuel Macron) help our Western partners better understand the situation we are in and perhaps embrace more fully the idea that there is no alternative to peace. No continuation of the conflict, no supply of weapons or resources can lead to a peaceful settlement. We need to sit down at the negotiating table and talk. That is the president’s key message,” Maxim Ryzhenkov emphasized.
