Zhabinka Sugar Mill sets new production record

BREST, 26 January (BelTA) - Zhabinka Sugar Mill has concluded the sugar beets processing season, Director General of Zhabinka Sugar Mill Aleksandr Poznansky told BelTA.

The mill processed 1,401,000 tonnes of sugar beets. “This is a record harvest and the longest processing season in the entire history of Zhabinka Sugar Mill. We started on 5 September and finished on 25 January. Ultimately, we will produce about 189,500 tonnes of sugar. We have never produced this much before,” Aleksandr Poznansky noted.

Zhabinka Sugar Mill sources sugar beets from 13 districts of Brest Oblast and two districts of Grodno Oblast. All the efforts of the agricultural workers have paid off handsomely. “The beets season was unprecedented. The average yield in Brest Oblast reached 645 centners per hectare, with high sugar content. There is something to be proud of,” Aleksandr Poznansky said.

Sugar production is a quite labor-intensive process. From the fields, the sweet root crops first go to beet receiving stations, and from there, they proceed to processing. The beets are washed, sliced, and the resulting shavings are subjected to diffusion. Then, the beet juice is purified at the defecosaturation station, excess water is evaporated to obtain syrup, from which sugar is crystallized. The final stage is packaging. After this, the product is sent to stores.

“We contribute to the food security of our country. For eight months until the new season, we will sell the sugar that we have produced. Approximately 40% will be sold domestically and the remaining 60% internationally. Our strategic partners are Russia and the countries of Central Asia,” Aleksandr Poznansky added.
